In Ukraine, on Thursday, March 10, the key concern is about the surrounded south-eastern city of Mariupol, where Russian occupation forces have destroyed an operating hospital and a maternity hospital, and nuclear power stations seized by the invaders. Ukraine has stated that 17 people were hurt in the attack in Mariupol as bombs destroyed a hospital, a maternity hospital and a children’s clinic hit on Wednesday, March 9. Mariupol, which had a 400,000-people population before the war has been surrounded by Russian forces since March 1 and repeated attempts at a ceasefire to allow civilians to leave have not been realised.
The strategic city is «without electricity, water, food, whatever and people are dying because of dehydration» accoring to Olena Stokoz of Ukraine’s Red Cross, but still defends itself against the invaders.
On Thursday, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba is expected to meet in Turkey with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov. Kuleba has noted that his expectations were «limited». Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has stated that Kyiv was seeking an immediate «cessation of hostilities and the war against Ukraine by Russia».
Russian occupation forces have not made significant territorial gains in Ukraine this week.
In the area of nuclear safety, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has stated that it has lost remote data transmission from its safeguards systems installed to monitor nuclear material at the Chornobyl and Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plants in Ukraine after they fell in the hands of Russian forces.
IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said he was concerned about the sudden interruption of such data flows to the IAEA’s Vienna headquarters from the two sites, where large amounts of nuclear material are present in the form of spent or fresh nuclear fuel and other types of nuclear material, Ukrinform and BBC report.
