In Ukraine, Wednesday, March 9, marks the second day of the evacuation of civilians from the north-eastern city of Sumy, while Russia continued artillery and air strikes on the oblasts of Sumy, Kharkiv and Zhytomyr hitting residential areas, civilian infrastructure and killing people, Ukrainian public broadcaster Ukrinform reports.
Dmytro Zhyvytskyi, the head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration, announced that the evacuation of civilians from the city of Sumy south to Poltava will continue from 09:00 until 21:00 on Wednesday as a humanitarian corridor has been negotiated.
On Tuesday, March 8, the evacuation started and 5 000 people and around 1 000 private vehicles reached Poltava.
Elsewhere in Ukraine five more humanitarian corridors have been negotiated with the invading Russian Federation and the International Red Cross: from Energodar to Zaporizhia, from Mariupol to Zaporizhia, from Volnovakha to Pokrovsk, from Raisins – Lozova (Kharkiv oblast) and in Kyiv oblast from Vorzel, Bucha, Borodianka, Hostomel and Irpin to Kyiv via Stoyanka and Belhorodka.

On the night to Wednesday, as a result of Russian shelling of villages in Chernihiv region, 10 households caught fire. In this oblasts, Russian forces also fired on one of the central streets of the regional centre, Chernihiv, killing one and injuring two more.
In Malyn city, Sumy oblast Five people, including two children, were killed in Russian bombardment. In Kharkiv region, in the village of Dinets, Chuhuiv district, a shell hit a residential building during an air strike, killing two people, including a child born in 2015, Ukrinform reports.
In Okhtyrka, Sumy region, Russian troops were bombing and firing on civilian infrastructure, killing at least one person and injuring 14 more.Okhtyrka Mayor Pavlo Kuzmenko spoke about the structures destroyed by the Russian army: «Railway station, building of the executive committee, local history museum, local department store and all the trade premises were completely destroyed, many people were injured, not all of them were found. Combined heat and power station is shut down, there is no electricity. Sewer collector is destroyed, there is partially no water supply. Many transmission towers are destroyed. We have been clearing out the blockages that occurred after air bomb was dropped.»
In Kharkiv oblast, Russian troops continued air and artillery strikes on the facilities of critical infrastructure and residential buildings. «Over the past day, several shells hit the regional power company, where the main substations are located. There were attempts to damage CHPP-5. As a result of the bombardments, 150 people were evacuated from one house in Kharkiv and about 200 from another,» the Communications Department of Kharkiv Regional Police Department stated according to Ukrinform.
