Cyclone activity and warmer weather expected in Latvia this weekend

On Friday, the 13th of December, the sky will be partially covered by clouds. Nevertheless, clouds will gradually disperse over the course of the week. No major precipitation is expected in most of the country. Some snow is expected in the evening. Western regions will see wet snow and rain, as reported by Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.

Roads will become slippery in some regions – motorists should be very cautious! The wind will blow from the north and north-west. In the morning the wind will blow from the west and south-west. Minimal air temperature at night will be -4° C… -9° C (0° C… -3° C along the coast). Daytime air temperature will reach +1° C… -4° C (+1° C… +5° C along the coast) during the day.

A cyclone from the north-west will approach Latvia on the weekend. Weather will become cloudy and more precipitation is expected. Precipitation is expected in most of the country – rain and wet snow in western parts, and wet snow and snow in eastern parts, as reported by meteorologists.

Snowfall in eastern parts may be heavy at times – the layer of snow will increase by 1-4 cm. Roads will remain slippery. Wind speed on Saturday will be slow to moderate. Wind speed along the coast may reach 15-17 m/sec. On Sunday, however, the wind will gradually draw in from the west and north-west in the second half of the night. Air temperature will drop to +1° C… -5° C at night. Daytime air temperature will reach -2° C… +5° C.

Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre reports weather conditions next week will be mostly the same. Several cyclones will pass through Latvia, bringing precipitation and strong wind.

Meteorologists note that warmer masses of air will flow to the region. This means precipitation will gradually transition into rain and wet snow. Air temperature at night will drop to -2° C… +3° C, whereas daytime air temperature may reach +8° C.
