On Wednesday, the 30th of August, Riga City Council passed amendments to the rules of procedure of Riga State City Municipality that provide for certain changes in committees.
Small changes were planned at first, but after the head of Riga City Council New Unity faction Olafs Pulks submitted his proposal, the suggested changes were expanded.
The number of deputies in the Housing and Environment Committee will be increased from 14 to 17.
The number of deputies in the Social Affairs Committee will be increased from 14 to 15. The same applies to the City Property Committee.
The number of deputies in the Finance and Administrative Affairs Committee will be reduced from 16 to 14. The same applies to the Education, Culture and Sports Committee. The number of seats in the City Development Committee will be reduced from 16 to 15.
The number of deputies in the Transport Affairs Committee will remain unchanged (17). Nothing will change for the Security, Public Order and Corruption Prevention Committee (13).
The new ruling coalition in Riga City Council decided to change the number of members in committees likely to ensure a larger majority of of the coalition in decision-making.
Changes also provide for the CEO of Riga City to have a vice, who will also be in charge of the Central Administration.
On top of that, Riga City Council also passed amendments to the by-laws of Riga State City Municipality, liquidating one vice-mayor post.
Until now there were three vice-mayors in Riga City Council.
Currently Mayor of Riga Vilnis Ķirsis has two vice-mayors –
Edvards Ratnieks, who is responsible for property and cooperation with Pieriga municipalities, and Linda Ozola, who is responsible for security and public order.
According to amendments, in the absence of the mayor he will be replaced by Ratnieks. In the absence of the latter, the mayor will be replaced by Ozola.
