Covid-denier receives conditional prison sentence for attempted arson of government building

Prosecutor in Latvia reaches agreement on conditional prison sentence for the man accused of an attempt to burn down Cabinet of Ministers building. The deal now needs to be approved by the court, as reported by office of the prosecutor.
According to the charges, in October 2021 the accused, driven by anger and being unhappy with Covid-19 restrictions in place in Latvia at the time, attempted to set fire to the Cabinet of Ministers building.
The accused splashed the entryway of the building with a petrol/diesel mixture and then attempted to light it with a lighter,
but he was spotted by State Police officers and detained him.
The prosecutor, commenting on the severity of the crime and the personality of the accused, as well as the fact that the accused admitted his guilt, reached a deal with him in regards to admission of guilt and penalty.
The deal provides for the prosecutor to ask the court to find the man guilty of the aforementioned crime and sentence him to one and a half years of prison with probation period of one and a half years. Convinced that the accused will not commit any more crimes, the prosecutor decided it is possible to request a conditional sentence with probation period of two years.
The deal was sent to Riga City Vidzeme Suburb Court for approval.
