The council of Latvian Post (LP) has stepped down, as LETA was told by the company’s council representatives.
Council members – chairman Raimonds Dūda and council member Ivars Blumbergs – stepped down because communication with the Ministry of Transport ended up in a dead end and was not focused on constructive work to reach a common goal and develop a competitive company that performs duties listed in its statutes.
The Ministry of Transport is informed of the LP council’s decision to step down.
The statement from members of the company’s council mentions that the parcel service industry continues developing rapidly in the world and in Latvia, and competition is encouraging changes in LP. Therefore, for more than a year, work has continued on the development of a new strategy.
The established course provides for changing the company’s business model and significantly improve the company’s processes to make sure they meet the specifics of the modern times and society’s needs, as well as promote LP’s growth and improve the company’s financial results. Officials of the Ministry of Transport were involved in the development of the new strategy. Like representatives of the ministry, they were informed about the reorganisation of LP network, as noted in the statement from the departing council members.
“Therefore, the type, style and channels of communication chosen by the office of the Minister of Transport in recent weeks are striking and incomprehensible. Instead of resolving important issues directly with the company, they publish updates on social networks. The shock and public request published by the minister’s office on social network was just as unexpected, specifically the request to explain the cost of the company’s best employee awards event, which the Ministry of Transport had previously seen and approved,” the statement continues.
The departing LP council members also mention that coming from the business environment and accepting the challenge of becoming members of the Council of Latvian Post, they saw an opportunity to develop it into a modern and successful company that is able to contribute to the Latvian economy. “It was clear this would not be easy, because all changes are met with opposition,” the statement mentions.
“In order to accomplish the result, all of us need to change and improve, LP and society in general. No one will do it for us. Transformation of a post office that has a very small number of clients and provision of postal services in a rational manner is a step intended to reduce the backwardness of the Latvian economy,” the statement adds.
Council members also mention that “if the political stage is more important and there is no bravery to implement unpopular but important decisions for the company’s future and Latvia’s economy, we see no reason to remain as council members in Latvian Post”.
Council members also mentioned the fact that Latvian Post started working with profits even in a very complicated geopolitical situation.
“The wasteful schemes that were created during the term of the previous management were ceased. We reported them to Latvian law enforcement authorities. We composed a capable management team. They will develop a sustainable and competitive strategy. We have created all conditions to make Latvian Post into a leader of domestic and cross-border postal and logistical services in Baltic States,” representatives of the company’s council explain.
LETA previously reported that Latvian Post decided to put its postal offices reorganisation plan on hold. This plan provided for closing down 105 out of 176 postal offices throughout Latvia.
