Latvian wild animals care centre Ežu hospitālis shared very sad news on their page on Facebook – many storks died and were injured during the thunderstorm that ravaged Latvia on Monday, the 7th of August.
“We can confidently say that today all of us experienced something truly frightening and unusual that caused a great deal of damage. Some got through with no worse than a bump, cars and houses were damaged, harvests were ruined and some people died,” states the Facebook post from Ežu hospitālis.
Representatives of this organisation confirm having received countless calls from residents, informing them about dead and injured storks.
“The ones that survived – some have only one wing, some are heavily injured and some are apathetic and in agony…” explains Ežu hospitālis.
In the evening on Monday the animal care centre surveyed territories and delivered the injured birds to safety.

“We have to help the ones still alive – assess their health and decide on what to do to help each individual bird. Additionally, we cannot simply leave the dead ones lying in the open…” stresses Ežu hospitālis.
Representatives of the organisation urge residents to provide any financial assistance they can afford to support the wild animal care centre.
The centre is currently working on making sure all the storks that were injured in the thunderstorm are delivered to safety. Ežu hospitālis plans to report on the state of health of those storks, their injuries and the ones killed by the thunderstorm later.
“We will do all we can to help injured birds and we will hope those died in the storm will have a more peaceful time in heaven,” representatives of Ežu hospitālis say.
