Cold weather will continue across Latvia, with forecasters predicting frost that may reach as low as –20 degrees Celsius at night in some locations, according to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.
On Thursday, skies will occasionally clear in many eastern parts of the country, while snowfall is expected mainly in the central regions. A light to moderate south-easterly to southerly wind will blow. During the day, air temperatures will rise to –5 to –10°C, with warmer conditions in Kurzeme at –2 to –5°C. In the far eastern parts of the country, temperatures will not exceed –12 to –14°C.
On Friday, conditions will be mostly dry, with a light to moderate southerly to south-easterly wind. Nighttime temperatures will drop to –6 to –12°C, –12 to –17°C in the east, and in some places under clear skies may fall as low as –20°C. During the day, maximum temperatures will range from –4 to –9°C, and from –9 to –12°C in eastern Latvia.
On Saturday, partly cloudy weather without precipitation is expected.
A light to moderate south-easterly to southerly wind will continue. Nighttime minimum temperatures will reach –13 to –18°C, while in Kurzeme and in some coastal areas they will be slightly higher at –7 to –12°C. Daytime temperatures across the country are forecast to range between –6 and –11°C.
On Sunday and at the beginning of the new week, an anticyclone will strengthen over Eastern Europe, maintaining dry and wintry cold conditions in Latvia with moderate winds. Skies will be mostly cloudy, clearing at times. Air temperatures throughout the country, including Kurzeme, will remain below freezing, and at night in eastern Latvia the thermometer will often hover around –15°C or even drop lower.
