On Tuesday, 30 December, the sky will be mostly overcast, clearing only in places. In many areas, clouds will at times bring precipitation, mainly sleet and snow, according to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.
As significantly colder air moves into Latvia, cumulonimbus clouds will actively form over the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Riga. These clouds will bring heavy snowfall in some places. On the night into Tuesday and during Tuesday daytime, snowfall in Kurzeme may be very heavy in places, and due to wind, drifting snow (blizzards) is also expected.
During these days, a light to moderate north-westerly and northerly wind will blow, moderate to moderately strong along the coast, turning more distinctly from the northwest and north on Tuesday. The wind will remain gusty, mainly in western and central regions, reaching 15–19 m/s, while along the coast gusts will strengthen to 20–23 m/s. Overnight, air temperatures will drop to -2…-6°C, with slightly milder conditions along the coast. During the day, temperatures will range from +1…-4°C.
The Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre reports that on the last day of the year the sky will remain cloudy, although sunshine may appear locally in western and central regions. Snow is expected in many areas at night and only in some places during the day. The snow cover will increase by 1–4 cm. The north-westerly and northerly wind will continue to blow at a moderate to moderately strong pace overnight, with gusts of 15–19 m/s in central and coastal areas, and at the beginning of the night along the Kurzeme coast even up to 20–22 m/s. During the day, the wind will ease across the country. Air temperatures will range from -3…-8°C both day and night, while along the coast they will be between -1…-4°C.
On the night into 1 January, precipitation intensity will decrease, and light snow is expected only in some places. However, during the first days of the new year, clouds will continue to dominate, and new precipitation zones will move across Latvia, bringing snow again to most of the country and increasing the snow cover by another 1–4 cm.
During daytime, the wind will again become gusty, reaching 20–21 m/s along the Kurzeme coast in the afternoon. For the rest of the week, skies will mostly remain cloudy, with snow and sleet in many areas. Although on the first day of the year temperatures will be wintry cold and in some eastern regions may drop to as low as -9…-14°C, air temperatures are expected to rise slightly toward the end of the week.
