Christmas in most of Latvia will be snowy

Rain and positive air temperature in the last two weeks has melted snow in nearly all of Latvia. However, weather conditions will change in the coming days – it will snow in many parts of the country, resulting in white Christmas, as reported by Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.
This weekend the sky will be cloudy in most of Latvia. Several precipitation zones will pass through the country’s territory in the coming days, bringing mostly wet snow and snow to most of the country and rain to coastal areas.
On the night to Friday, the 22nd of December, the layer of snow in eastern territories will have increased by 5-9 cm. In western areas the layer of snow will go up by 5 cm. The layer of snow will continue gradually growing. By Christmas Eve most of the country will be covered with snow.
Meteorologists note that visibility will go down during precipitation events. Roads will be slippery as well. On Friday night the wind will blow from the south-east and south. In western and central regions wind speed will reach 15-19 m/sec.
Gradually the wind will calm down and will blow from the south-west and west. Along the coast, however, wind speed will go up. On Sunday wind speed will be strong. On Friday and Saturday air temperature will stay at -2° C… +3° C. On the night to Sunday air temperature will drop to -1° C… -6° C.
On the last week of December there will be precipitation, with strong wind every now and then. In many parts of the country air temperature will be negative. The layer of snow will gradually become thicker.
Winter Solstice, which symbolises the start of astronomical winter, is celebrated on the longest night of the year: 21st to 22nd of December. Friday will be the shortest day of the year. Its length in Riga will be only six hours 43 minutes. The sun will go up at 9:00 and will go down at 15:44.
