By day an electrician in Latvia, secretly an informant for Russian military intelligence, VDD reveals

One of the men detained last year and now charged with spying for Russia worked as an electrician.

The Prosecutor’s Office said that charges in the case have now been brought and formally served on the accused.

The Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that the accused worked as an electrician and is between 25 and 30 years old. The man is unmarried.

At present, the Prosecutor’s Office is not providing more detailed information about the charges, as the information is classified. At the same time, prosecutors confirmed that the individual was driven by ideological motives.

As previously reported, the State Security Service (VDD), which forwarded the case to the Prosecutor’s Office, recently stated in a press release that the criminal proceedings against this person were initiated on the 14th of October, 2025, based on information provided by the Military Intelligence and Security Service (MIDD).

The investigation established that the Latvian citizen obtained and passed information to Russia’s military intelligence service (GRU) about privately owned infrastructure in Latvia that could be used for aviation, such as the Spilve airfield, the presence of NATO allied forces in the country, and various current issues related to the defence sector.

The individual also provided the GRU with information on public sentiment in Latvian society,

support for Ukraine, and critical infrastructure facilities in Latvia.

In addition, acting on instructions from the Russian special services, the man obtained practical information, such as the conditions for purchasing prepaid mobile SIM cards in Latvia—specifically, whether they can be bought without revealing one’s identity.

The VDD investigation found that the person maintained covert contacts with a GRU officer and passed on the collected information during meetings on Russian territory.

In cooperation with MIDD, the VDD detained the suspect on the night of the 18th of October, 2025. The individual has been placed in custody as a preventive measure.
