On Monday, the 19th of December, British PM Risi Sunak plans to announce more military aid for Ukraine during his visit to Riga.
Sunak will arrive in Riga for a meeting with his colleagues from Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia. This event is part of the meeting of heads of state and government of the Joint Response Force. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky will attend the meeting via a video call.
Sunak will also invite leaders of other countries to continue providing aid to Ukraine in 2023, as confirmed by the British PM’s office.
He will also announce plans for Britain to supply Ukraine with «hundreds of thousands of rounds of artillery ammunition next year under a GBP 250 million contract that will ensure a constant flow of critical artillery ammunition to Ukraine throughout 2023», as mentioned in the statement of the office of the British PM.
Britain has been a leader when it comes to aid for Ukraine. This includes the supplies of missile systems and 125 anti-air weapons, the statement continues.
The statement continues and reports that Britain has supply more than 100 000 units of munitions to Ukraine since February. Supplies are directly tied to successful operations in liberating Ukraine’s territories.
Last month Sunak visited Kyiv and affirmed London’s support for Ukraine in its war against Russia.
The statement also mentions that Britain and its European allies have coordinated a response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and they are committed to bringing peace to Europe once more.
At the meeting of leaders of countries of the Joint Response Force will also discuss the Ukraine’s defence needs.
«But to achieve peace, we must deter aggression and our deployments across the region together are vital in ensuring we are able to respond to the gravest of threats,» Sunak’s statement mentions.
After his visit to Riga, Sunak will travel to Estonia, where he will meet with NATO and British troops. He will also sign an agreement with Estonia’s PM Kaja Kallas on partnership in technologies. This agreement provides for strengthening Britain’s and Estonia’s cooperation in fields like education, healthcare and cyber security.
