Britain to increase number of reservists; will be able to call up to 65

Britain announced on the 15th of January that it will raise the maximum age at which former military personnel can be called up to 65, thus increasing the number of reservists, writes the news agency Reuters.
Until now, former military personnel could be called up again up to the age of 55. Other European countries, including France and Germany, have also taken steps to increase the number of reservists. This is a response to Russian aggression in Ukraine and the US demand that Europe take more responsibility for its security.

Britain also indicated that the rules that determine when former military personnel are called up will be changed

– if until now this could only happen if there was a threat to national security, a serious emergency or an attack on the country, then now conscription will also take place if preparations are made for war-like situations.
General Paul Griffiths said the draft reforms would allow for rapid mobilization of talented forces when needed, enhance readiness, and help align with approaches taken by other NATO members. The changes are expected to come into effect in the spring of 2027.
