Border Guard: Pressure from the Belarusian side remains high

Over the past three days, the State Border Guard has prevented 73 attempts to illegally cross the Latvian–Belarusian border, the service reported.

In total, 11,074 people have been stopped this year from attempting to cross illegally from Belarus into Latvia — more than double last year’s figure. Meanwhile, for humanitarian reasons, 26 illegal migrants have been allowed to enter Latvia.

As previously reported, in 2023, a total of 5,388 people were prevented from crossing the border illegally, while 26 individuals were admitted to the country for humanitarian reasons.

The Latvian government has extended the enhanced border protection regime along the Belarusian frontier until the 31st of December, 2025. The measure was introduced in response to the increased flow of illegal migrants orchestrated by Belarus.

The heightened control regime is in effect in the Ludza municipality and its parishes, Krāslava and its parishes, Augšdaugava municipality, Daugavpils, and Kaunata parish in Rēzekne municipality.
