In the morning of 31 December 2021 Latvian State Police received information from the Emergency Medical Service that a body of a two year old child was found in an apartment in Liepaja. On top of that, there were multiple haematomas found on the child’s body.
Officers from Kurzeme Region State Police Department in Liepaja detained the spouse of the child’s mother on the spot. An arrest warrant was issued by the court the next day. The arrested man has a criminal record – mostly property-related offences.
The body of the child was sent for forensic examination to determine the cause of death. Police have commenced a criminal procedure for causing intentional grievous bodily harm and causing death by accident. According to the Criminal Law, such a crime is punishable with deprivation of freedom for three to fifteen years with or without confiscation of property and with or without probation period for up to three years.
State Police remind no one is considered guilty until his or her guilt has been proven in accordance with the law.
