Birth rates in Latvia below one thousand for second consecutive month

In November 2024 the registered number of newborns in Latvia is less than one thousand, according to provisional data from the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia (CSP).

940 newborns were registered in Latvia in November, which is 12.9% or 139 less when compared to the previous month in 2023. 458 boys and 482 girls were born in Latvia in November.

In October 2024 there were 994 newborns.

In 11 months of 2024, there were 11 650 newborns in Latvia, which is 13% or 1 744 newborns less than in the same period of 2023.

In 11 months of 2024, among the registered newborns, 5 939 were boys, which is 13.4% or 916 less than in the corresponding period of 2023, but 5 711 were girls, which is a decrease of 12.7% or 828.

The data also show that in 11 months of last year 24 042 deaths were registered in Latvia, which is 5.1% or 1 286 less than in the 11 months of 2023, when 25 328 deaths were registered.

Thus, the number of deaths registered in 11 months last year exceeded the number of births by 12 392, while in the corresponding period of the previous year the number of deaths exceeded the number of births by 11 934.

In the 11 months of 2024, a total of 9 703 marriages were registered in Latvia, which, when compared to the corresponding period of 2023, is 2.6% or 257 marriages less.

The provisional population number in Latvia was 1.853 million on the 1st of December 2024.
