Belarusian citizen in Latvia officially accused of espionage

Latvian Prosecutor General’s Office has presented official charges to the Belarusian citizen who is accused of espionage in the interest of Belarusian military intelligence. The case is investigated by the Prosecutor General’s Office Criminal Justice Department’s Division of Specially Authorised Prosecutors, as confirmed by the prosecution office’s press-representative Ieva Šomina.
The prosecutor’s office does not provide more information about this case. The case may be submitted to the court in September.

Espionage in the interest of foreign military intelligence in Latvia is punishable with ten-year prison sentence with up to three years of probation.

As previously reported, Latvian State Security Service (VDD) requested the criminal charges. The Belarusian citizen in question was detained by VDD in cooperation with Latvian Military Intelligence and Security Service (MIDD) on 15 February 2022.

According to findings of this investigation, the Belarusian citizen in question was recruited and trained for secret cooperation in Belarus.
The suspect is put under arrest.
In recent years VDD has detained and has requested official charges against multiple Latvian citizens for spying in Russia’s favour. The most well-known person detained for this so far is Saeima deputy Jānis Ādamsons.
