According to information from the Ministry of the Interior, work is underway on the Latvian-Belarusian border. 57 km of territory have been cleared of trees and the first several kilometres of permanent fence have been installed so far.
According to the ministry, «work along the Latvian-Belarusian border is going according to plan». Currently the main activities include stump removal, territorial planning, moat digging and other landscaping work.
The ministry reports that approximately 70% of territory affected by the border fencing plan has been deforested so far.
The construction contract includes the installation of appropriate infrastructure along 149.7 km of Latvian-Belarusian border. 82 km of this territory needs to be deforested to give way to this new infrastructure.
A fence is planned to be installed along this entire territory. Four bridges have been constructed over the rivers Asūnīca, Rosica and Sarjanka. It is also planned to construct six towards, patrol paths and other necessary infrastructure.
It is planned to complete installation of infrastructure on Latvian-Belarusian border by the end of June 2024. The fence itself is planned to be completed by the end of February 2024.
On 24 November 2021 installation of a temporary fence along the country’s external land border was completed along 36.9 km of priority sections of the border, specifically areas with the highest risks of illegal border-crossing attempts.
It is planned to install a fence along 283.6 km of Latvian-Russian border.
230 km of fence have been installed so far. A permanent fence is planned along 148.8 km of the border. 95.2 km have been installed so far.
To complete construction of infrastructure necessary to keep Latvia’s external land border safe, a contract was signed on 15 March 2022 regarding an examination of the state border to ensure it complies with the construction project, requirements of regulations and binding standards, as well as the scale of work of the construction project.
Provision State Agency continues the real estate property alienation procedure, measurement of pieces of land, identification of border checkpoints and restoration of border areas along Latvian-Belarusian and Latvian-Russian border.
