Annual inflation in Latvia in October was lower than the EU average

Annual inflation in Latvia was lower than the European Union (EU) average in October, according to data released on Tuesday by the EU statistics office Eurostat.

Annual inflation in Latvia was 2.1% in October. The lowest inflation rates last month were recorded in Ireland and Lithuania (both 0.1%), Luxembourg (0.9%), Italy (1%) and Finland (1.5%).

The highest annual inflation rates were recorded in Romania (5%), Belgium and Estonia (both 4.5%), Poland (4.2%) and Croatia (3.6%).

Consumer prices rose in October in year-on-year terms in all EU Member States except Slovenia, where they remained stable.

Annual inflation averaged 2.3% in the EU and 2% in the euro area in October.

In October, consumer prices rose by 0.4% in the EU and by 0.3% in the euro area compared to the previous month, September.

Consumer prices in Latvia – as in Greece, Lithuania and Hungary – increased by 0.1% in October compared to September. Monthly inflation was recorded in 12 EU Member States, with the highest rates in Estonia, Croatia, Slovakia and Finland (all +0.8%), while monthly deflation was recorded in Luxembourg (-0.1%), Cyprus (-0.2%), Slovenia (-0.3%), Portugal (-0.4%) and Malta (-1%).

Eurostat calculates inflation according to the EU’s Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP).
