All family doctors in Latvia have signed a contract to continue providing healthcare services in 2024, as LETA confirmed from the National Health Service (NVD).
The end of 2023 marked the end of family doctors’ contracts with NVD. Latvian Association of General Practitioners (LĢĀA) had previously considered signing a new contract before the end of the year, to ensure doctors’ work is paid for by the state the first four days of the week. Services on the fifth day would be charged to the patient receiving them. The association explained that starting with the 1st of January their medical sector’s financing will go down by 13%. This means there are justified concerns about the future of family doctors’ practices.
On the 27th of December, after meeting with Minister of Health Hosams Abu Meri, members of LĢĀA decided to sign contracts with NVD, extending their cooperation by one more year. All family doctors in Latvia have signed new contracts.
Abu Meri promised to increase funding for family doctors. It is also planned to work in a special group to prepare a report on improving primary healthcare services for the next three to four years.
