Afghan school girls sent home as Taliban puts female education on hold

In Afghanistan, which is controlled by the Taliban radical Islamist group since 2021, girls above class six, have not been allowed to attend school until further notice, British broadcaster BBC reports.
In the South Asian country, schools were set to open nationwide after months of restrictions since the Taliban came to power after a military comeback in August, 2021. Afghanistan’s Education Ministry suddenly announced girls’ secondary schools would stay shut, causing confusion.

The decision came a week after the education ministry announced schools for all students, including girls, would open around the country on Wednesday, March 23.
«We inform all girls’ high schools and those schools that [have] female students above class six that they are off until the next order,» according to the notice. The notice added schools would reopen after a decision over the uniform of female students was made in accordance with «Sharia law and Afghan tradition», BBC reports.
