Ukrainian officials are considering reopening Boryspil International Airport, which was closed due to the war, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced on Tuesday, the 19th of December. The “technical flight” without passengers or cargo operated by local airline Skyline Express shows that the airport’s infrastructure is still in working order and that flight safety can be guaranteed despite Russian air strikes, reports Reuters.
“A Boeing 777-300 aircraft was operated from Kiyv-Boryspil Airport (KBP) on a technical flight to an airport in Europe, as requested by the operator, the Ukrainian airline Skyline Express,” the airport announced on its Facebook page.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the reopening of Boryspil International Airport would be a victory for Ukraine, especially in the economic area. At a press conference in Kyiv, Zelenskiy said that discussions and concrete requirements for the reopening of the airport were under way.
The airport announced that this was the fourth successful take-off since the airport was suspended due to the war.
Ukraine aims to resume the operation of Boryspil airport as soon as possible, stressing that its air defence capabilities have improved significantly.
According to Reuters, the airport has indicated that despite the airspace closure, it remains focused on maintaining operational readiness, financial stability, infrastructure maintenance and staff certification.
