A cold week ahead in Latvia: snowfall and falling temperatures

On Monday, skies will be cloudy, clearing in some western areas overnight. Snow is expected in places during the night, with periods of heavier snowfall in southwestern Latvia, where the snow cover may increase by 2–4 cm, according to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.

Snowfall will also continue in some regions during the day. At night, a light to moderate southerly wind will blow, shifting to southeasterly and easterly winds during the day. Night-time minimum air temperatures will range from -3 to -8°C, but in areas where skies clear, temperatures may drop to as low as -10°C. During the day, maximum temperatures will reach between -1 and -5°C.

On Tuesday night, snow is expected across much of Latvia, while during the day snowfall will persist only in some eastern areas. A light to moderate southeasterly to easterly wind will blow. Daily minimum and maximum air temperatures will range between -2 and -7°C, although

in some northwestern areas overnight, as skies clear, temperatures may fall to around -10°C.

Wednesday will be mostly cloudy. Snow is expected in many areas overnight, while during the day it will fall only in some western regions. A light to moderate southerly wind will prevail. Night-time temperatures will drop to -4 to -9°C, and daytime maximum temperatures will remain in a similar range, between -3 and -7°C. Along the Kurzeme coast, daytime temperatures will be slightly milder, rising to between -1 and -3°C.

In the second half of the week, the influence of a high-pressure system will strengthen, leading to a decrease in precipitation. On some days, skies will clear more frequently. Air temperatures, compared with the first half of the week, are expected to remain cold, with wintery conditions continuing across the country.
