A campaign to prepare society for crisis situations is starting in Lithuania

The Interior Ministry of Lithuania has announced a basketball-themed campaign that calls on the public to prepare for various crises – war, nuclear disasters and other emergencies, Lithuanian public media LRT reports.
Daiva Ulbinaitė, the press secretary of the Lithuanian Interior Minister Agnė Bilotaitė, told the media that she very much hopes that no one will have to use this knowledge, but it is better to be safe than to be sorry.
Launching the campaign, the Interior minister said that civil defense has been neglected in Lithuania and pointed out that for a long time it seemed that everything was far away, but now its necessary to admit that the threat is close. She added that in recent years, Lithuania has faced many different challenges to security and public health.
Bilotaitė said that until now civil defense training has been carried out sloppily, but now the citizens of Lithuania are starting to ask where the nearest shelter is, how to prepare an emergency bag and what to do to protect themselves and their families.

«We need to be very clear that there are no threats close to us today. There is no need to be frightened. But knowing and being prepared for different scenarios is very important. That’s why today we are launching a long-term campaign,»

added the minister.
It is expected that the campaign will reach at least one million citizens of Lithuania. A study by the Interior Ministry revealed that only half of the Lithuanian population knows what to do in an emergency. Introducing the research, the senior adviser of the ministry, Eglė Vileikienė, pointed out that Lithuanians aged 30 to 50 are the most knowledgeable, while older people and those living in small villages have less information and knowledge.
