The city of Tallinn and Cleveron Mobility signed the agreement to start two month trial period of driverless delivery robots in the streets of Tallinn’s Old Town, writes ERR News.
Tallinn will be European Green Capital 2023, and the city is aiming to reach carbon-neutral delivery goals. Tallinn Deputy Mayor Tanel Kiik told the media that the Old Town of Tallinn is an active business center, a place for tourism, and also has local residents living there, therefore it makes sense to use more environmentally friendly and safe solutions, such as electric transportation, including delivery transport. He pointed out that delivery robots could be a great alternative to traditional vehicles to operate in narrow Tallin streets.
The cooperation agreement means that for two months trial period CLEVON 1 driverless delivery robots will operate to serve businesses and institutions from 6 to 10 in the morning.
This time is chosen to see if the solution fits all city’s needs, and also there are no sufficient data about operations in heavy traffic, so morning hours with less activity are deemed more appropriate.
The pilot project will be implemented in cooperation with DHL Express Estonia. CLEVON 1 delivery robots measure 1,15 meters wide by 1,55 meters high and 2,5 meters long and are equipped with six cameras providing a 360-degree view of the vehicle to ensure safety. It is planned to use only one delivery robot at a time.
Clevon CEO Arno Kütt said that delivery robots are a good choice to make the environment cleaner: «If we want to improve the quality of life in Central Tallinn, fully electric vehicles such as the CLEVON 1 are one possible solution for helping reduce pollution in the area.»
