Riga municipal public transport company Rīgas satiksme (RS) has decided to change its price policy, reducing the price of the month-long ticket and introducing a new 90-minute ticket.
The company announced that from 31 December 2022 onward the price of month-long tickets for all forms of public transports in Riga will be EUR 30 instead of EUR 50.
RS will also adopt a new ticket type: 90-minute ticket.
The price of this ticked for all passengers will be EUR 1.50. This new ticket type is planned to replace the single-use and one-hour ticket.
There are also plans to simplify the available list of tickets. Passengers who have the right to use public transport services free of charge will not be affected by changes. As for passengers provided with partial discounts (students, teachers, etc.), they will receive a 50% discount from 31 December 2022. Working pensioners will be able to use public transport services in Riga free of charge.
Month-long tickets
From 31 December onward the price of month-long tickets for all forms of public transports will be reduced. The price will be EUR 30 instead of the current EUR 50. Month-long tickets for week days (EUR 40), tickets for one form of transport (bus, trolleybus, tramway) for all days (EUR 35) and work days only (EUR 30) will no longer be available.
Passengers who use partial discounts provided by Riga City Council – workers of healthcare institutions, students, teachers, social workers, parents of many children and working pensioners – will be able to purchase month-long tickets for all forms of public transports with a 50% discount (EUR 15).
Time-limited tickets
Changes to the assortment of tickets offered by RS will include the adoption of 90-minute tickets. These will cost EUR 1.50 each.
24-hour tickets will remain available. The price will remain EUR 5.
Three-day tickets (EUR 8) will remain available, as will the five-day ticket (EUR 10).
Trip-bought tickets
The option to purchase tickets mid-trip from the driver will remain available only for the 22nd route bus. Payment card option will remain as well. The price of this ticket will be EUR 2.
Transition period
All tickets purchased before 31 December 2022 will remain valid for 60 days. Residents will be able to turn in unused tickets back to Rīgas satiksme within 12 months of purchase in exchange for a 100% refund.
At the moment there are 135 different types of public transport tickets. Many of them are used by only a small number of passengers. This makes maintenance of such a large number of options very difficult and costly.
