Latvian State Security Service detain pro-Kremlin activist in Daugavpils

Latvia’s State Security Service (VDD) detained a pro-Kremlin activist in Daugavpils. This person is accused of voicing support of Russia’s aggressive war in Ukraine and contributing to national and ethnic hate in Latvian society for a long time.
According to VDD, in the last couple of days this person was actively encouraging residents to oppose the demolition of Soviet monuments in Daugavpils.
On 30 October VDD performed a court-sanctioned search at this person’s home. Evidence acquired in this search is currently undergoing analyses.
VDD commenced a criminal procedure against this person on 28 October in accordance with sections 74.1 and 78 of the Criminal Law.
During the investigation VDD found that the person in question was systematically spreading statements that serve Kremlin’s interests in videos uploaded to the internet.

According to VDD, these videos justify and glorify Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and voice hateful opinions about Latvians and Ukrainians.

On 31 October the person was made a suspect and was presented with multiple security measures not associated with deprivation of freedom.
