In August 2021 the number of foreign and resident visitors comprised 255.6 thousand, which is 14.9 % less than in August 2020 and 0.5 % less than in July. In accommodation establishments visitors spent 446.4 thousand nights, which is 16.7 % less, compared to August of the previous year, and 1.2 % less than in July.
In August 2021 tourist accommodation establishments hosted 148.5 thousand Latvian visitors, which is 3.4 % more than in August 2020 and 19.2 % more than in August 2019 before the pandemic. The number of nights spent by them comprised 248.4 thousand, and it rose by 3.5 %, compared to August last year, accordingly data of the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia.
Latvian visitors stayed mostly in Riga (16.1 %), Liepāja (7 %), Jūrmala (6.9 %), Cēsis municipality (6.6 %), Talsi municipality (5 %), Kuldīga municipality (4.6 %) and Ventspils (4 %).
In August 2021 the number of foreign visitors out of all visitors in accommodation establishments comprised only 41.9 % or 107 thousand, which is 31.6 % less than in August 2020, however 27.5 % more than in July. Compared to August last year, the number of nights spent by them has fallen by 33 % and comprised 198 thousand.
The majority of foreign visitors came from Lithuania (23.6 thousand), Germany (18.3 thousand), Estonia (13.3 thousand), Poland (5.8 thousand), United Kingdom (4.7 thousand), Italy (3.4 thousand), France (3.1 thousand), Finland (2.9 thousand) and Russia (2.8 thousand).
Most foreign visitors were hosted in Riga – 64.5 %, Jūrmala – 11.9 %, Liepāja – 3.8 %, Ventspils – 2.8 % and Sigulda municipality – 2.2 %.
Also in August 2021 the drop in the number of visitors from Lithuania, Estonia and Finland can be explained with the so-called “Baltic bubble” of last summer, within the framework of which in August last year the number of visitors from neighbouring countries and Finland increased significantly.
