Approximately 20 000 representatives of the education sector have confirmed plans to participate in the upcoming indefinite strike. Registration continues, as reported by Latvian Trade Union of Education and Science Workers (LIZDA).
According to provisional data on the number of potential participants of the indefinite teachers’ strike, the trade union received applications from 19 979 education workers from 707 institutions by the end of 8 September.
Registration of applications still continues. This means the number of participants keeps getting bigger.
LIZDA chairperson Inga Vanaga is grateful to members of the trade union and all education and science sector’s workers «who have acted decisively to defend their rights for a balanced workload and a respectful pay». She extended gratitude to more than 20 organisations that have voiced support for Latvia’s teachers.
«The large number of supporters and participants of the strike proves how much the problems in the sector have drown and how justified LIZDA’s demands really are.»
«We invite education and science sector’s workers to consolidate even more and sign up for the strike to accomplish implementation of demands together,» Vanaga invites.
As previously reported, last week the reconciliation committee failed to reach a compromise in the topic of teachers’ pay rise, which prompted LIZDA to commence preparations for the indefinite strike.
