Funding allocated to security services to patrol Latvian-Belarusian border

Latvia’s Cabinet of Ministers decided to provide funding of EUR 112 821 to the Ministry of the Interior in order to cover expenses related to the situation on the Latvian-Belarusian border, as confirmed by the ministry.
Expenses surfaced in July and are related to overtime pay of employees of institutions subordinate to the Ministry of the Interior, as well as bonus pay and official visits, fuel procurement. There are also expenses related to asylum seekers and their stay in Latvia.

The funding volume provided to the ministry is EUR 105 686. State Police will receive EUR 22 416 of this amount, State Border Guard will receive EUR 60 038, State Border Guard College will receive EUR 884 and the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs will receive EUR 22 348.

EUR 7 135 were allocated to compensate increase in average earnings, which surface as a result of the pay and bonus pay for employees for overtime. This includes EUR 947 for State Police, EUR 5 002 for the State Border Guard, EUR 74 for State Border Guard College, and EUR 1 112 for the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs.
To reduce the risk of illegal migration on the Latvian-Belarusian border, the State Border Guard’s border protection offices have seen an increase of orders. There has also been an increase in support measures.

In July 2022 Latvian State Border Guard deterred 17 and detained 11 people on the Latvian-Belarusian border.

On the Latvian-Russian border authorities have tightened border control regime to ensure more intense state border monitoring and control.
