U.S. urges Russia to create demilitarized zone around Zaporizhzhia plant

Russia carried out missle strikes on Zaporizhzhia on Tuesday morning, 30 August, as reported by Ukraine’s media The Kyiv Independent.
According to Zaporizhzhia Oblast Governor Oleksandr Starukh, Russian forces launched a missile strike on Zaporizhzhia overnight on Aug. 30. There are currently no reported casualties or significant damages to infrastructure.
U.S.  urged Russia to create demilitarized zone around Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant  and  to comply with demands to demilitarize the area around the plant. White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said a controlled plant shutdown would be the safest option.
However, Russia has refused to comply with calls for the demilitarization of Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. Dmitry Peskov, the spokesman of Russian President Vladimir Putin, said the demilitarization of the occupied plant is «not being discussed now.» He added that the IAEA mission will come to Zaporizhzhia from the Ukrainian side, accordingly Ukraine will ensure its security.
As BBN has already reported Russian troops have occupied the plant since early March. Ukraine has been accusing Russian forces of placing artillery near the plant to attack Ukrainian positions, endangering the nuclear facility. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) mission is on its way to the plant to ensure its safety.
