Latvian KNAB detains several people; State Revenue Service receives visit as well

On Tuesday, 23 August, Latvian Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB) carried out criminal procedural activities in multiple locations, including the State Revenue Service (VID). Several people were detained, as confirmed by KNAB.
On 2 June KNAB commenced criminal proceedings in accordance with Section 320 of the Criminal Law – possible large-scale bribery by a group of people according to a prior agreement.
Criminal procedural activities were performed in multiple locations on Tuesday, including VID.
Three people were detained. Two more people have the rights for defence. The court issued arrest warrants for two persons. KNAB did not comment if there are any officials among the five people. The bureau’s referenced section of the Criminal Law applies to officials are recipients of bribes and private persons as accessories.

KNAB continues the investigation, which has entered the active phase. In the interest of the investigation no more detailed information about criminal proceedings is provided.

KNAB thanked the Prosecution Office for Investigation of Public Office Holders Misconduct Offences and VID Internal Security Office for the support provided during the investigation.
VID representative Andrejs Vaivars did not say if any VID employees of officials are among the detained persons.
