Inčukalns underground gas storage facility already has enough natural gas to cover Latvia’s needs during the next heating season, Latvian Minister of Economics Ilze Indriksone confirmed at a press-conference on Friday, 5 August.
The gas storage facility already has 11.6 TWh of gas. Owners of 5.6 TWh of this volume are companies registered in Latvia. Owners of 6 TWh are companies registered abroad.
Indriksone explained that foreign companies sell gas to Latvian consumers and Latvian companies can sell gas to foreign consumers.
The 5.6 TWh also includes the state security reserves owned by Latvenergo JSC.
Indriksone reported that in the next heating season the expected gas consumption in Latvia is 6.9 TWh. This volume will be covered by the facility’s existing 5.6 TWh and supply contracts for 1.3 TWh.
Contracts have not yet been signed, but it is planned to procure another 2 TWh of gas in Q1 2023.
«There is gas in Inčukalns and we are prepared for the heating season,» said Indriksone.
