New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy stated that at least 23 people had died in his state – most of them stuck in their vehicles as the waters rose. At least 14 people lost their lives in New York City, including a two-year-old boy. Eleven of the victims drowned while trapped in their flooded basements, officials announced.
The population, authorities and emergency services seemed to be taken by surprise by the magnitude of the floods. «We did not know that between 8:50 and 9:50 p.m. last night, that the heavens would literally open up and bring Niagara Falls level of water to the streets of New York,» New York Governor Kathy Hochul noted, referring to the large waterfalls on the border of US and Canada, BBC reports.
