On Thursday, 14 July, Latvian Saeima passed in the final reading amendments to the Energy Law that impose a ban on imports of Russian natural gas from 1 January 2023 onward.
Previously the government reached a conceptual agreement on refusal to use Russian natural gas.
The initial proposal for the ban of Russian gas was submitted by Saeima deputies Reinis Znotiņš and Jānis Cielēns.
The parliament also passed regulations for specific cases and agreements with other EU member states’ regulators for the way under which the ban to supply gas from Russia is implemented.
Regulations regarding agreements with other EU member states will apply to cases when Latvian single natural gas transmission and storage system operator Conexus Baltic Grid JSC has an active contract with another member state’s operator on the creation of a single natural gas transmission system.
As previously reported, Latvia and the European Union started seriously considering banning Russian gas supplies after the start of Russian-Ukrainian war.
