Estonian Rescue Board and North Tallinn district and Environment Board have commenced the cleanup of a leak of crude that was found in the central portion Stroomi beach of Kopli Peninsula in Tallinn at the end of June, as reported by Estonian public media ERR.
The Rescue Board reports that the pollution first uncovered on 25 June is below the sand level, from which it has started to flow upwards. The affected territory is a 300 m2 shoreline and shallow water.
On 27 June the polluted area was fenced off with help from the coast guard. At the same time, cleanup crew started manually collecting the leaked fuel.
42 bags of heavy fuel products have been collected so far.
According to reports, pollution has reached a depth of approximately 1 m in the affected area.
«However, this is not a crisis situation, because the spill is bound to the sand and does not spread. There is no significant danger present to the marine environment and marine species,» said environmental board advisor Himot Maran.
The source of the leak remains unknown for the time being, ERR reports.
