10 000 signatures collected to shut down Latvian Russians Union

More than 10 000 signatures have been collected on manabals.lv voting platform in favour of cessation of operations of Latvian Russians Union political party.
10 000 signatures are needed to submit the initiative to the Saeima for review. Now the parliament will need to evaluate this initiative.
The initiative was submitted in the first half of May by Gatis Auziņš. With it, he wanted to «motivate the legislator to create a precedent and adopt a system to prevent the operations of anti-governmental political and other organisations in Latvia». He believes it should start with shutting down LKS as a political party.

«LKS is not part of democracy – it is a weapon used by the enemy of democracy.

Implementation of this initiative will be an example for future measure intended to protect Latvian and western values and act against their enemies. Closure of LKS’ political operations will help reduce the ability of enemies of Latvia’s state to split the country’s society, prevent the glorification of a foreign country’s (Russia) armed forces, promotion of war romance – 9 May cult, as well as reduce the influence of [Russian President Vladimir] Putin’s regime in Latvia. This is important to put an end to end the mockery of Latvia’s history, occupation, deportations of Latvian to Siberia,» Auziņš explains the proposal.
According to manabalss.lv team, LKS objected to the publication of the initiative. The party’s chairman Miroslavs Mitrofanovs, referencing the Constitution, did try to explain why the initiative «For a united society without LKS» has no place on the platform. Manabalss.lv team did not agree with the request from LKS.
