Latvian minister promises zero tolerance for «putinists» in the country

Among Russian speaking residents in Latvia there are different opinions about Russia’s aggression in Ukraine. This is why the state should send a clear message that there will be zero tolerance for «putinists» in the country, said Latvian Minister of Defence Artis Pabriks during the discussion «Enhancing Latvia’s Defence: what can we do?» organised by Turība University.
He stresses that fans of Russian President Vladimir Putin have no place in Latvia, and they’re «starting to understand this».
Pabriks also said Latvia needs to ensure its military system develops as quickly as possible. He stressed that it’s necessary to develop a military industry in Latvia so that the country is able to manufacture necessary equipment in times of crisis.

«In large strides we have ended up in a war economy,» said Pabriks.

Retired Brigadier General Gundars Ābols stressed that the war in Ukraine demonstrates the tactics and capabilities of the Russian army, and Latvia should take into account Ukraine’s experience and develop its defensive capabilities, including anti-missile defence system.
Leading researcher of Latvian National Defence Academy Ieva Bērziņa agreed that military defence is a very important aspect in a time of war, but it’s not the only important aspect, because public morale and patriotism are also equally important.

«Public attitude and thinking are important,» said Bērziņa, adding that

among Russian speakers there are many people who are against the war in Ukraine.

She stressed that Russia’s aggression in Ukraine or ‘the black cloud’ is unlikely to impact Latvia in a military way, but there may be other conflicts that could extend to Latvia.
