In May 2022 Riga International Airport serviced 474 000 passengers or 66% of the pre-pandemic number, according to data available about the airport’s operations. Since the start of the year the airport has serviced 1.67 million passengers.
The percentage of direct passengers was 84%, whereas the percentage of transit passengers was 16%. A similar situation for direct and transit passengers was observed for the first five months, the airport reports.

Nearly half or 48% of the serviced passengers or 228 000 were carried by airBaltic, followed by Ryanair with nearly 33% or 155 000 passengers.
Compared to May 2021, the airport’s number of passengers has increased by nearly 5.6 times – a year prior, when travel restrictions were till in place, the airport serviced slightly more than 85 000 passengers.
The turnover of freight carried by aircraft remains affected by the war in Ukraine and global sanctions against Russia and Belarus. In May the airport processed 1 533 tonnes of freight, which is a third lower when compared to May 2019 (2 129 tonnes).
