The now ex-Minister of the Interior of the Republic of Latvia Marija Golubeva will be in charge of Saeima’s European Affairs Committee, as confirmed by the parliament’s press-service.
This was announced by members of the committee at the Friday meeting. It was necessary to elect a new head of he committee because the previous one – Vita Anda Tērauda – has decided to step down.
European Affairs Committee passes Latvia’s national positions on topics viewed by EU Ministers Council.
The minster that represents Latvia in different sectors of the EU Ministers Council has a duty to inform the Saeima committee with the position of Latvia’s government on all important topics, ranging from legislation to strategic topics. The minister receives a mandates from the parliament to present Latvia’s opinion at EU Ministers Council meetings only once the official position has been coordinated with Saeima’s European Affairs Committee.
As previously reported, on 19 May Golubeva’s mandate in the Saeima was restored. She stepped down from her post as minister after the National Alliance demanded from the PM to have her dismissed for how authorities handled the situation in Victory Park.
The party threatened to leave the government if Golubeva remained as minister.
Golubeva then said she’d lost the prime minister’s trust and stepped down on her own.
