Ex-director of Constitution Protection Bureau says Russian armed forces’ capabilities are overestimated

Currently it does not look like Russia and Vladimir Putin have a plan to turn the war in Ukraine in their favour, said Latvian President’s national security advisor and ex-director of Latvian Constitution Protection Bureau Jānis Kažociņš in an interview to LTV programme Rīta panorāma.
He mentioned – if Putin had such a plan, changes would be exacted. However, the Russian army, according to him, has not secured any notable accomplishments even in eastern Ukraine, where nearly all of Russia’s military forces are currently concentrated.

The expert estimated that Russian armed forces are unhappy with how the war started and is managed, because they have suffered enormous losses.

Although Ukraine’s statistics about Russian army’s losses are not entirely trustworthy, Russia’s losses are still very considerable, stressed Kažociņš.
He said Russian forces regrouped quickly in Ukraine, but this did not provide any benefits.

Generally, Kažociņš says Russian armed forces and their combat capabilities are overestimated, and over the years they have not been able to resolve many of their standing problems, including the level of corruption.
