This year Latvia to remember the victims of war in Ukraine on 9 May

9 May 2022 in Latvia is declared a day of remembrance of victims of Russian-Ukrainian war. On this day Latvia’s flag in mourning decoration will be set up on public and residential buildings in Latvia, as reminded by Liepaja municipal council.
Liepaja municipal council also plans to set up Ukraine’s flag next to Latvia’s flag in a show of solidarity. The flags already hoisted in the city will be lowered or changed to mourning decoration.
Liepaja municipal council informs and reminds residents that Latvia’s flag needs to be set up at all public and residential buildings in mourning decorations on 9 May – this is required by the Law on the Day of Remembrance of Victims of War in Ukraine.

The law also states that on 9th and 10th of May this year residents will not be allowed to use fireworks.

The law also dictates that no public entertainment and festive events are allowed to be organised in any municipalities on 9 May this year. Only processions, protests and gatherings associated with remembrance of victims of war in Ukraine.
Latvian Saeima passed the Law on Day of Remembrance of Victims of War in Ukraine, making 9 May 2022 a day of remembrance of victims of Russian aggression in Ukraine in order to turn society’s attention towards the military aggression of the Russian Federation in Ukraine and as a show of solidarity with Ukrainian nation in its fight for Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.
The law will lose its force on 11 May 2022.
