On Monday, 2 May, a photo exhibition Glory to Ukraine! Glory to Heroes! was opened at Victory Square in Riga. At this exhibition residents and guests to the city can have a look at the harsh everyday situation during the war in Ukraine.
16 four-poster stands with high definition photos and information about the war in Ukraine have been installed at Victory Square. All photos were carefully selected and provided by international news agencies in Europe. The exhibition will remain available until 15 May, as BNN was told by Riga City Council’s Communications Office.
«We were sure it would never happen again. But two months have passed since the shocking morning of 24 February. Every day starts with the question ‘Does Kyiv still stand?’ It does. But the sea port city of Mariupol is no more. Invaders have ruined it to its foundations, subjecting several hundred thousand people to extermination, starvation and regular shelling. Because the city’s defenders refuse to surrender. Ukraine refuses to surrender to the invader even though the losses known so far are massive and the horrors people have seen are hard to take in,» said journalist, author of the text Ingvilde Zālīte.
The exhibition was put together in response to citizens’ initiative posted on Manabalss.lv on creating a photo exhibition in Victory Park dedicated to the damages Russia has caused in Ukraine.
It is organised by Riga City Council and its curator is photographer Ilmārs Znotiņš.
«Living in Riga, in peace and quiet, it is hard to believe that such a proud and freedom-loving nation can be exterminated so brutally and a large European country – methodically turned into ruins. We admire the courage and tenacity of the Ukrainian people. We hope these crimes against humanity will be punished,» adds Zālīte.
