Latvian authorities request criminal prosecution of State Police official for leaking information

Latvian Internal Security Bureau (IDB) has sent to the Prosecutor’s Office for Investigation of Offences in the Service of State Bodies a criminal procedure with a request to commence criminal prosecution of an official of State Police Riga Region Department for disclosure of non-disclosable information that is not an official secret.

The pre-trial investigation revealed that the police official in question, using information system intended to be used for official duties, leaked to some private person information not related to official secrets or official duties.

The criminal procedure is commenced in accordance with Section 329 of the Criminal Law – disclosure of non-disclosable information which is not an official secret.
IDB reminds that no person is considered guilty until his or her guilt has been proven in accordance with the procedure detailed in the Criminal Procedure Law.
In Q1 2022 IDB commenced a total of 14 criminal procedures and performed investigations in 72 criminal procedures. In three months of this year a total of 11 criminal procedures involving officials from institutions under the Ministry of the Interior were sent to the office of the prosecutor for commencement of criminal prosecution. During those criminal procedures investigators uncovered 17 crimes.
