Only if Ukraine manages to take back Crimea would Russian President Vladimir Putin’s current situation be rocked in any meaningful way, as lsm cites the words of acting director of Latvian Institute of International Affairs Kārlis Bukovskis.
In his interview to LTV programme Šodienas jautājums, he stressed that no one expects Kremlin’s behaviour to change at the moment.
«Putin’s situation would be rocked only if Ukraine managed to take back Crimea. This would mean he would lose far more than he gains through his ‘special operation’,» said the researcher.
Researcher of the Centre for East European Policy Studies Mārcis Balodis agreed that wrinkling in the Kremlin is a normal practice. This does not mean, however, that the world can expect any changes. He reminded that for 20 years now society in Russia has been depoliticized to make sure people don’t ask questions and instead passively consume information provided by the Kremlin.
«No major changes [within Russian society] are expected at the moment. We have to keep in mind that there are more than 140 million people living in Russia. The dissatisfaction of a couple of hundred or thousand people does not reach critical mass,» said the foreign policy expert.
