Migration pressure down on Latvian-Belarusian border

In recent weeks Latvian State Border Guard has not had to prevent any attempts by people to cross the Latvian-Belarusian border, as reported by the State Border Guard.
There have also been no cases of people being detained for illegally crossing the country’s border. The last such attempt was recorded on 5 April, when two people were allowed to enter Latvia for humanitarian reasons.
Since August 2021, when the state of emergency was first declared along the border, Latvian State Border Guard have prevented illegal border-crossing attempts of 6 644 people.
Also since the start of the state of emergency 156 people were allowed to enter Latvia due to humanitarian reasons. 508 illegal border-crossers from third countries have been detained so far.
In response to the increased illegal immigration pressure, Latvia’s government declared a state of emergency in Ludza, Kraslava, Augšdaugava, as well as Daugavpils. The state of emergency was declared in 11 August 2021 and then extended until 10 May 2022.
