Latvian State Security Service detains Belarusian citizen for possible spying

On 15 February Latvian State Security Service (VDD) together with Military Intelligence and Security Service (MIDD) detained a Belarusian citizen suspected of spying in the interest of Belarusian special service, VDD reports.
The person is now a suspect and remains under arrest.
According to information from VDD, the person collected information about Latvian National Armed Forces, military objects and critical infrastructure in the interests of Belarusian special service. The person is accused of filming and taking photos in secret.
The criminal procedure commenced on 15 February in accordance to Part 1 of Section 85 of the Criminal Law – illegal collecting of non-disclosable information for the purposes of transferring it or commits transferring thereof to a foreign state or foreign organisation, either directly or through mediation of another person. The person was detained and other related activities were performed the same day as the criminal procedure was commenced.
Officers of VDD confiscated data storage devices. Analysis of data found on those devices continues.

In the interest of the investigation, VDD provides no further comments on this case.
VDD reminds that no person is considered guilty until his or her guilt has been proven in accordance with the procedure detailed in the law.
