Riga mayor: the monument complex in Victory Park is declared unsafe

The monument complex located in Victory Park is officially declared unsafe. Because of this the municipal administration will fence it off, said Mayor of Riga Mārtiņš Staķis.
Riga City Council’s City Development’s report mentions the technical state of the monument complex located in Victory Park has worsened over the years, and it is no longer considered safe for residents.
Considering the findings, Riga Monument Agency will fence off the monument complex on Monday, 11 April. This situation will remain until authorities make their decision, according to representatives of Riga City Council.
As previously reported, on 30 March representatives of the Foreign Affairs Ministry explained at a meeting of Saeima’s Foreign Affairs Committee that Latvia’s obligations in regards to the monument are included in one of four agreements that also governed the exit of the Russian army from Latvia in 1994.
After discussions, participants of the meeting agreed the committee would turn to the Ministry of Justice to determine the institution’s opinion on this matter. The ministry has until mid-April to coordinate its position with the government to avoid a situation when another ministry objects to the position of the Ministry of Justice later.
Considering that residents’ initiative in this topic was previously submitted to the Education, Culture and Science Committee, it is planned to organize a joint meeting of both committees.
Members of the ruling coalition had different opinions about the future of the monument in Victory Park, said leader of the Conservative Party, Minister of Justice Jānis Bordāns.
The politician said the coalition supported his proposal to restart the task previously entrusted to the Foreign Affairs Committee in 2019 to prepare solutions in regards to this monument.
