Aivars Lembergs, who remains accused of serious crimes of corruption, has sent a letter to the rector of the University of Latvia Indriķis Muižnieks and the university’s Senate, informing them that as of 7 April 2022 he would like to reject his honorary LU member status.
«The growth of my Alma Mater will continue making me happy, and that under your leadership the university will soon enter the TOP 100 of the world’s best universities. I am also happy that my modest contribution to the University of Latvia will continue service its present and its future,» Lembergs claimed in his letter.
The University of Latvia has so far been unable to say if it is possible to refuse honorary member status.
BNN previously reported that the University of Latvia Academic Committee sent to the Senate the issue regarding Lembergs’ honorary status.
The committee unanimously voted in favour of pushing the issue of annulling member status.
The Senate may decide on annulling Lembergs’ honorary status at an extraordinary meeting on Monday, 11 April.
Chairman of the Academic Committee Jāzeps Logins explains that at the previous meeting of the Senate there was some confusion with improper legal definitions and references to court proceedings that have yet to reach a conclusion in all instances.
This time the academic committee has prepared a more detailed document to submit to the Senate.
