Latvian State Probation Service receives a new manager – Imants Jurevičius

On Tuesday, 15 March, Latvia’s government decided to approve the proposal from Minister of Justice Jānis Bordāns and appoint Imants Jurevičius as the new manager of the State Probation Service (VPD), as BNN was informed by the minister of justice press-secretary Andris Vitenburgs.
Throughout his career in VPD, Jurevičius has been in charge of multiple projects important to Latvian criminal penalty enforcement system. He has also contributed a great deal to international cooperation in the field of probation and justice restoration system.
In the last three years Jurevičius has been responsible for VPD strategic development process. He was also the one who developed the service’s development strategy for 2021-2027.
This experience is a major pre-condition to ensure successful operation and development of the service, stresses Bordāns.
Jurevičius holds a Master’s degree in political science. His previous experience in the field of probation is highly praised, according to the Ministry of Justice.
Since 2019 Jurevičius has worked in VPD Operational Analysis and Development Department as deputy director. Previously Jurevičius was in charge of offices of different size and functionality. This helped him acquire experience both in human resource and financing management, as well as establishment of cooperation on a national and international level.
Since 2009 Jurevičius has been responsible for preparation, implementation and monitoring of many strategically important development projects. VPD adopted sex crime monitoring and social behaviour correction system, electronic monitoring of perpetrators, as well as numerous improvements to the work model involving probation clients.
Vitenburgs says this helped assist with the development of Latvia’s probation system and its international recognition.
Between 2013 and 2019 Jurevičius was elected and was performing duties as a member of the board of European Probation Confederation.
The previous head of VPD Mihails Papsujevičs was rotated to the Ministry of Justice as state secretary.
